Such coatings can be also applied on paper or wired structures

"Amidst the competitive world of construction stucco is still holding its own firm place, once originating during the old Roman and Greek civilizations. Its success goes to its versatile virtues of a brilliant heat resistant finish to a wall, adding along with it a great deal of decor. It is highly resistant to fire, durable and shows immense strength against harsh weather. The beauty of this great finish lies in the fact that it doesn't spread flames or create smoke. Stucco though sounds very tough to make but consists of very simple materials like sand, lime, water and some other ingredients. At present, Stucco is categorized into mainly the following two types -

Traditional/Hard coat stucco -- As the name suggests it is hard, but brittle. The hardness is attributed to the fact that it is made up of water, sand and Portland cement instead of lime which was traditionally used. Traditionally stucco used to be made up of lime, water and sand which is durable and resists really harsh weathers. The porous nature of the stucco enables it to set in quickly thereby avoiding water damage to a great extent. Once the substrate/construction surface is installed properly, a metal lath is applied and then the stucco finish is applied on it using a trowel. As soon as the primary coat of stucco is set, it is covered with another coat. Application of stucco generally consists of three coatings.

Such coatings can be also applied on paper or wired structures. The primary or, scratch coat is applied on the surface which bonds with the substrate. Once this coat is set, it is scratched and the second layer, known as brown coat is applied, which in turn bonds with the scratched surface of the primary coat. The finish coat is the last and outermost layer applied to give a great finish. The finish coat can be colored, if needed.Synthetic Stucco -- There are various synthetic materials which resemble stucco and since the last few decades, many buildings in America are coated with these. Such synthetic fibers or acrylics when added to the basic stucco, makes it more strong, flexible and less heavy because of their single one-layer structure.
